If i pay taxes, state and federal, out of my paycheck, why do i have to pay taxes on the goods i buy?

This isint a joke. Isint that considered double taxation? Some of my fellow co-workers have discussed this and we were not sure what the right answer is. I mean how many times can you be taxed on the same money?
