Herring-bone coursing brickwork Norman?!?
Well, the herringbone type of brickwork, also known as opus spicatum, was in use by the Romans. Your question piqued my curiosity so I tried looking up Lincoln Castle. I found what's supposed to be an offical site, But it looks to be a website for the Lincolnshire County Council's tourist information (at least that's what I'd call it as it doesn't appear to be just for Lincoln Castle). At any rate, checking the history on the castle I clicked for the Norman history of the castle and it includes a pic with a herringbone pattern. If you scroll over the pic it says Image of the Herringbone from the Norman times. In fact the last paragraph says the herringbone was a typical patern used by the Normans. I'd say that answers things.
